MSc Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology

Academic Staff

The following are some of the staff involved in the development and support of the MSc in Dental Radiology.

Eric Whaites
Course Director
Eric is the Course Director for the MSc in Dental Radiology and Postgraduate Diploma in Dental Diagnostic Radiology, and Head of the Department of Dental Radiology at GKT. After qualifying from Guy's Dental School in 1978, he completed a couple of year's in general dental practice before returning to Guy's in 1981. He obtained his Fellowship in 1982 and the MSc in Dental Radiology in 1984 from King's. He was appointed Senior Lecturer in charge of the Department of Dental Radiology at Guy's in 1989 and obtained the Diploma in Dental Radiology from the Royal College of Radiologists in 1990 before being appointed a consultant. He has lectured on the MSc for External students since its inception, and was appointed Course Director in 1998.

Suk Ng
Suk is Senior Lecturer/Honorary Consultant in Dental Radiology at GKT. She qualified from Manchester Dental School in 1987. After one year in general dental practice, she spent four years studying for a PhD at the University of Manchester, jointly with UMIST. In 1993 she began her specialist training in dental radiology upon joining the then United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's and St Thomas ' as Lecturer in Oral Biology (Radiology/Anatomy). She obtained her FDS from the Royal College of Surgeons in 1996. In the following year she was appointed to the post of Senior Lecturer in Oral Radiology at St Bartholomew's and the Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry. She obtained the Diploma in Dental Radiology from the Royal College of Radiologists in 1998 and was accepted onto the Specialist List for Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology of the General Dental Council in 2000. In April 2001 she was appointed to her current post in the Dental Radiology department of GKT and as Programme Organiser for the MSc in Dental Radiology and Postgraduate Diploma in Dental Diagnostic Radiology for External students.

Wendy Fenton
Course administrator
Wendy has been working in the Department of Dental Radiology at King's College since 1972 and was appointed Administrator for the MSc in Dental Radiology for External students at its inception in 1990. She was previously the co-ordinator for the course for internal students for nearly 15 years. Wendy is the main point of contact in the Department for students on the course and handles any problems encountered, both academic and personal.

Jim Thurston
Jim obtained his MSc in Medical Radiation Physics from Brunel University. He has worked for 10 years as a Medical Physicist in the Radiation Protection Services of three major London teaching hospitals. His work has involved two main areas: radiology physics and the audit of work with unsealed radionuclides. He has also been involved in physics support of the use of lasers in medicine. He has worked at King's College Hospital as Deputy Radiation Protection Adviser since February 1999.

Chris Lawinski
Chris received his MPhil from Queen Elizabeth College. After deciding to move into the area of medical physics, he joined King's College Hospital in 1978 and studied part time to obtain the University of London's MSc in Radiation Physics. He is currently employed as Consultant Physicist to KCARE, the King's Centre for Assessment of Radiological Equipment. He has been involved in the MSc in Dental Radiology for both External and internal students for many years.

Nick Drage
Nick is a Consultant in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology at University Dental Hospital, Cardiff. He qualified from Guy's Dental School in 1989 and, after a year in general dental practice, spent four years in oral and maxillofacial surgery obtaining his Fellowship in 1994. He worked in the Dental Radiology Department at GKT for seven years from 1995-2002, firstly as a registrar and then as a lecturer. He obtained his Diploma in Dental Radiology from the Royal College of Radiologists in 1997.
