Postgraduate study in History Education

Is this course for me?

The course has been developed specifically for those teaching history and for those in supporting roles, e.g. education advisers, museum educators and NGO workers. The intercultural approach can be adapted to any national or international context of history education, and the University had students from all five continents.

You will learn from your fellow students and personal tutor, and gain the confidence to put your new ideas into practice. You will need access to a school or educational setting in order to undertake some of the tasks from the course and evaluate practice.

Comprehensive study materials and support

This course is available via distance learning, allowing you to study flexibly for this course whilst balancing work and personal commitments. Working from your own home and/or place of work, you will access the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and will be guided through your study materials by your tutor. Short courses All of the core and optional modules are offered as credit-bearing Short courses. This is an ideal option if you're keen to update your professional knowledge, enhance your career or sample the programme. The Short course fee per module is £1,190.

Course aims

The course will:

  • focus on contemporary national and international issues in history

  • help you gain a broad understanding of issues that impact on the teaching of history

  • engage critically with the best and most relevant thinking and research, and applying what you learn to your own working environment

  • enable you to learn from your tutor and fellow students and apply what you learn to your own working environment

The School of Arts and Humanities within the Institute of Education, University of London, is responsible for the design of the programme and the development of course materials. There is also a similar course in Citizenship Education and students may combine modules across the two programmes.  The programme builds on the UK DfES Certificate of Teaching of Citizenship. Those who complete this certificate gain automatic exemption from one optional module.
