Postgraduate study in Laws:
Master of Laws (LLM), Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate
FAQS
New Questions
and Answers providing additional information about the Postgraduate
programmes in Laws will be added to this page as and when they are developed.
Q - If
I successfully complete the LLM programme will I be eligible to take
the Bar exam in London or perhaps New York ?
A
- The LLM is not a Qualifying Law Degree; it is designed for continuing
professional development only. Since it does not cover the Foundations
of Legal Knowledge, it would not carry any credit at the Law Society
for England and Wales for the purposes of completing the Academic Stage
of Legal Education for the legal profession.
If
it is your intention to qualify to practise law in England, then the
LLB may be of interest. In England and Wales, the Law Society and the
General Council of the Bar recognise the LLB Degree of the University
of London for External Students as a "Qualifying Law Degree",
provided the period of study involved is not more than six years and
the graduate has passed the written assessments in the seven foundation
law subjects.
Candidates
are always advised to check with the ruling body for the jurisdiction
in which you wish to practice for details of eligibility and local requirements.
