Virtual
Learning Environment (VLE).
In
primary care, many practitioners are both geographically and professionally
isolated. In addition to tutor-facilitated virtual seminars, students
will be able to communicate and share ideas via the Virtual Learning
Environment.
Why
study an online course?
In primary care, many practitioners are both geographically and professionally
isolated. The heavy and unpredictable demands of day-to-day practice
make it difficult for postgraduate students of primary care to find
regular protected study time. It is often neither practical nor affordable
to seek full-timeflexible and affordable access to a high-quality learning
environment, in which individual study is greatly enhanced by discourse
with others who share the same vision for primary care and have met
comparable problems.
One
important goal of the course is to develop not merely individual self-directed
learning skills but a thriving community of practice that will continue
and grow even when students have graduated from the course. Developing
primary health care services is often training either in their home
country or overseas. The part-time, online modules in this programme
offer a thankless task, requiring complex cross-disciplinary skills
and intellectual flexibility. Simple email communication is known to
be highly effective in helping local mission leaders to maintain perspective
and benefit from the experiences of others in the ‘same boat’. This
course aims to nurture and model the lateral support that will be essential
for the continuing lifelong learning and professional development of
the University students in their lives and work.
